RIYADH: Old Saudi hand Nasser Al Johar has been appointed as coach of the Olympic team for the reminder of the AFC Final Round For the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) announced on Sunday.
Al Johar will replace his compatriot Bandar Al Juaithen who failed to win a single match with the Saudi team during their ongoing campaign.
Saudi Arabia are currently bring up the rear in Group C after losing to Qatar 0-1, drawing goalless with Japan and another draw 1-1 with Vietnam. They are to take on Vietnam at home on October 17 in the fourth round of the qualifiers.
The Saudis have two points, trailing Vietnam on goal difference while Japan are leading with seven points followed by Qatar who are three points adrift.
SAFF vice-president Prince Nawaf Bin Faisal Bin Fahad stressed that poor results had forced the SAFF to take such a step to ensure the image of Saudi football is preserved.
We have chosen Nasser Al Johar due to the fact that he know the players very well. He is also well informed of the national team’s situation due to his work as a consultant for the national teams committee, said Prince Nawaf. We will be looking for a new coach for both the Olympic and youth teams after coordination with the national team coach.
